Cupertino, Sunnyvale: King’s Academy girls ride two upset wins into CCS soccer semifinals

Published Thursday March 2

They will graduate eight seniors off their roster this June, but Luotto is still optimistic…

The Firebirds ended up losing on penalty kicks to the Haybalers.

That’s how close The King’s Academy girls soccer team was to winning its 1st Central Coast Section soccer championship coming into this week.

The Knights, the fifteenth seed, stunned 2nd seed Soledad on penalty kicks and then upset 7th seed Santa Cruz 2-0 last Sat to advance to the Division II semifinals earlier this week against eleventh seed Sobrato.

The Knights, who are a modest 7-11-2 overall for the season, battled Soledad to a 3-3 tie in regulation, and then pulled off the shocking upset, 5-4 on penalty kicks.
